Magnificat!

Zelenka Magnificat in D

Forbes L’Estrange Magnificat

Rutter Magnificat

To round off the 2023-24 season, Streatham Choral performs Magnificats by Zelenka, Forbes L’Estrange and Rutter at St Leonard’s Church.

Jan Dizmas Zelenka is a Bohemian composer of the late 17th / early 18th centuries, much respected by his contemporaries including J S Bach. His Magnificat is an upbeat Baroque piece with some distinctive crunchy harmonies.

Joanna Forbes L’Estrange is a contemporary English singer and composer. The Magnficat is taken from her King’s College Service of 2019. It is a simple and moving setting.

Rutter’s setting is particularly uplifting and is in both Latin and English. The work evokes the Virgin Mary with energetic rhythms and strong, fun melodies.

  • Conductor: Calum Fraser

  • Organ: Samuel Ali

Tickets: £10.00 (£8.50 concessions). Tickets available online, from members of the choir, or on the door - until sold out. Please note that there is a booking fee of £1.00 per ticket (£0.90 concessions) for online booking.

Seating: Maximum audience: 250. Unallocated and available on a first-come-first-served basis. 60 socially-distanced seats available in the gallery. Please email us at streathamchoral@gmail.com if you would like to be added to the list for one of these seats.

Programmes and bar: We investigated the possibility of a cashless system for the bar and programmes, but unfortunately this was not an easy task without access to a card machine. We are investigating this for future concerts, but in the interim will need to operate a cash bar (£3 wine / £0.50 juice) and cash donations for programmes (suggested donation: £1)

COVID-19 requirements and adjustments: We would encourage everyone to take a lateral flow test before attending the concert - particularly if they are not double vaccinated. Given that, post-vaccination, COVID-19 symptoms can be more akin to the common cold and much less distinctive, we would ask that you do not attend the concert if you feel at all unwell. We also encourage the wearing of masks when not singing or drinking.

There will be hand sanitizer available around the church, and we will also ventilate the building by way of open windows and an open side door.
